What is Index Interpretation Report
Index Interpretation Report is an analytical report designed to study the correlation between different parameters collected at research points (POI or Points of Inspection) in a field and vegetation indices obtained from a drone or satellite.
This report enables you to understand which characteristics of crops, land, or the surrounding environment impact crop vegetative activity most. As a result, the system can build an index map of the indicator that correlates most with the chosen vegetation indices for analysis. For example, if the most influential parameter is the presence of weeds in the research points, the system will effectively build a weed map based on your research points and selected vegetation index.
How it works
In general terms, the process looks like this. First, you create a set of indicators you wish to investigate at inspection points (such as the level of weed infestation, degree of plant damage, crop quality, etc.). These indicators are then used to create the corresponding Ground Survey Mission in the web interface. You can use the Skyglyph Groundscouter mobile application to conduct the research and data collection. With its help, you can synchronize inspection points with the web application, collect data in the field offline, and upload survey results for further processing in the system. Next, you can select a range of vegetation indices for further correlation and indicator index building. We can offer Sentinel, Planet, or download index files from third-party systems as a source of vegetation indices.
The whole process consists of several steps:
- Asset creation
- Downloading Vegetation Maps from Sentinel, Planet, or third-party sources for selected Asset
- Mission planning. Here you place your POIS on the assets map
- Ground Mission Execution with mobile app
- Generation of Index Interpretation Report
- Report Analysis and Tuning
The next chapter explains every step in detail.
How to build Index Interpretation Report
Setup
Before using the Index Interpretation Report functionality, please ensure the corresponding research indicators have been created in the Handbooks->Indicators section.
1. Create your Asset
Please take a look at the corresponding instructions concerning Asset creation
2. Get Vegetation Maps for selected Assets
You can read how to create satellite reports based on the field by following the link: How to build Satellite Report.
3. Plan your Mission
3.1 Create Ground Mission
3.1.1 To create a mission, please go to your Asset and click on the "Create Mission" button:
3.1.2 In the mission creation window, please specify the following:
- Type of Mission (Ground)
- Type of Sensor (Smartphone)
- optionally add a specific name of your Mission
and press the button "CREATE"
3.1.3 In the ground mission window that appears, go to the Map tab and add Inspection Points. There are two options:
3.1.3.1 you can create a predefined point automatically in the form of a cross in the field. In such case, please
3.1.3.1.1 press the button "ADD POI"
3.1.3.1.2 Then press "PLACE POIS AUTOMATICALLY"
3.1.3.1.3. Specify # of POIs and press "PLACE POIS AUTOMATICALLY" again:
3.1.3.1.4. specified # of POIs will be added:
3.1.3.2. Second option is you can manually add points by points on the field map. To run this way, Press the "ADD POI" button every time you want to create a new point and create a point at the cursor position by clicking the mouse:
NOTE 1: Before this step, it is useful to have vegetation maps already generated with the help of satellite reports. You can read how to create satellite reports based on the field by following the link:
If you already have ready-to-use vegetation maps, you can use them to navigate the survey planning process. To view the vegetation maps available for the current field, use the pop-up menu on the right and select the vegetation report you need:
In such a way, you can select characteristic research points covering various vegetation zones.
NOTE 2: To set a point to a specific coordinate, use the coordinate search (in the search term, enter a colon and latitude and longitude separated by a comma):
4. Execute Ground Mission
You can execute your Ground Mission with the help of our Android mobile application - GroundScouter. Run follow step to launch and execute the process:
4.1 Synchronize web POIs with mobile
Synchronize the mission with the mobile application. Your phone must be online to sync. Launch the mobile app. Login and synchronization will run automatically. After synchronization next screen will be shown with planned missions.
To prepare Mission for offline execution, enter into the Mission and turn on selector "Use Offline"
4.2 Collection of data in the field
After that you will be able to collect parameters in the POIs in offline mode as well as take photos:
4.3. Returning to office/home and synchronizing mobile data with the web platform
If you have a stable Internet connection, go to Mission details, press the synchronization button, and wait for process completion:
5. Generation of Index Interpretation Report
5.1. Check the completion of synchronization
Return to your ground mission in the web interface, open the tab "Map" and verify that the data from the mobile device is successfully synchronized:
5.2 Initiate the generation of the Index interpretation report
Return tp bookmark "Preview" and initiate Index Interpretation Report generation:
5.3 Selection Vegetation Map(s)
Select at least one index map to analyze (you can select several) and press the button "NEXT":
5.4. Launch report generation:
Please, make sure that everything is selected correctly; you can specify the name of the report and press the button "GENERATE":
6. Report Analysis and Tuning
After completion of generation, you can explore correlation results in the tab "Correlation":
Also, the index map builds automatically for the parameter with the highest correlation:
On the "Correlation" tab, view the correlations of other indicators. If necessary, maps of other indicators can also be generated. To do this, select the desired indicator and click "Save and recalculate":
